It’s not just the magnificent plane trees on the riverside walk and the stunning lime avenue behind it that make Wandsworth Park stand out for tree lovers.
We now have over 60 different tree species in the park, with new plantings that include Dutch Elm Disease Resistant elms, Black walnuts, an Empress and exotic Cherry Trees, a Golden Rain tree … even a Pecan tree! These complement mature native trees like oak and field maple to provide an Arboretum that is a rich and essential habitat for wildlife including insects, bats and birds.
The Friends have labelled many of these trees to ease identification and have created a Tree Map to help you see the collection.
The Friends were delighted when 24 new trees were planted in Wandsworth Park in the winter of 2024. Both the Arboricultural Association & Defra recommend that newly planted trees need 50 litres of water weekly during the summer for the first three years.
Anticipating a long, dry summer we realised our new trees were going to need some extra help and launched the "Befriend-a-Tree" scheme.
The scheme proved to be a huge success with 64 volunteers signing up to regularly bring ‘grey’ water from home or fill up bottles from the drinking fountains to ensure regular watering. Despite one of the hottest driest summers on record – not one of the new trees died (a record for Wandsworth Park).
The Tree Friends kept in touch through a WhatsApp Group, covering holidays, lending an extra hand and providing updates - creating a real sense of community but most importantly played a vital role in the development and survival of our newly planted trees.
