Once a disused strip of land, this space was nearly lost to development. The controversial planning application to privatise it was rejected after Friends of Wandsworth Park bid for to make it an "Asset of Community Value (ACV)".
Friends took on the care and management of the river terrace, with a goal: to turn it into a sensory garden and peaceful retreat for all.
The Scented Garden was originally designed by Fiona Garnett Crumley, one of the founding member of the Friends and a renowned horticulturist who spent decades working in some of Britain’s most prestigious gardens, including Chelsea Physic Garden and Chiswick House & Gardens.
Fiona's planting scheme focused on fragrance, texture, and accessibility. Raised beds and aromatic plants such as lavender, rosemary, jasmine invite visitors to engage with nature through touch and scent.
After Fiona’s death in 2021, the garden was renamed in her honour, a living tribute to her legacy of inclusive design
